Lighting completely changes how a garden feels at night. Done well, it becomes an extension of the house; done badly, it looks flat or dazzles. These are the decisions to make before choosing any fitting.
Do you want to highlight a tree or a wall, light a dining area, mark a path? Each use needs a different kind of light, and it works best to combine them in layers rather than lighting everything evenly.
Bollards and ground lights guide along paths and steps. Accent spotlights pick out plants, sculptures or walls. Pendants or wall lights give a warmer light in pergolas and seating areas. In every case, look for a good level of protection against water and dust.

Mains power gives steady, controllable light and can be built into a home automation system with scenes and schedules. Solar lights are useful in remote, sunny spots, though their performance is less consistent.
Grazing light along a wall, or uplighting into a tree, creates depth; avoid pointing light at seating areas or neighbours’ windows. Remember safety on steps and level changes, and choose materials that withstand the weather with little upkeep.
