A classic flat in Barcelona generally refers to a home that presents architectural and design features typical of the period in which it was built, especially during the periods of modernisme and Noucentisme that were prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This flat presents some of the common characteristics of a Noucentista flat so most of them were restored or else updated but preserving the essence of this style:
Architecture:
Many classic flats in Barcelona were built during the modernist era, which is characterised by the use of organic shapes, curves and ornate detailing.
High Ceilings:
High ceilings are a distinctive feature of classical architecture in Barcelona. This not only creates a feeling of spaciousness, but also allows more light to enter.
Wooden carpentry:
Doors, windows and decorative elements are usually made of hardwood. Carpentry is usually elaborate and detailed because it is often restored rather than replaced.
Mouldings and Cornices:
Decorative details, such as ceiling mouldings and cornices, are common in classical architecture. In this case they were preserved and updated.
Large Windows:
Windows are usually large to allow natural light to enter. Window frames may also have decorative detailing.
Decorative Fireplaces:
Some classic flats may feature decorative fireplaces, which were common in the architecture of the period.
Spatial Distribution:
The distribution of spaces in a classic flat may reflect the architectural trends of the time, with spacious and well-lit rooms.
Therefore, prior to the intervention, ornamental elements and architectural and constructive details that were important to preserve were identified. In this respect, the exterior doors and joinery, the original stained glass windows and the original cast-iron radiators could be recovered. Unfortunately, the floor no longer had the original hydraulic floors, which had been replaced in an earlier period.
The LED lighting was discreetly integrated into the mouldings and coving. The colours and materials used had to be consistent with the original aesthetics.
The furnishings and décor complement this classic style.
The design pieces reflect the original period and blend in without compromising authenticity.
Overall, the key is to balance modernisation with respect and preservation of the original architecture. Careful intervention can enhance the functionality of the space without sacrificing the authenticity and elegance of the classic floor.
