Types of flooring and wall finishes for your home

Floors and wall finishes set the tone for the whole house. Choosing well depends on the room, how it is used, the upkeep you are prepared for and how everything works with the other materials.

Flooring

Solid wood: warm and timeless; it needs a little more care but can be restored. Engineered wood: more stable and compatible with underfloor heating. Porcelain: very tough and suitable throughout, including kitchens and bathrooms; large formats reduce joints. Microcement: seamless, ideal when you want floor and walls to read as one. Laminate and vinyl: affordable, water-resistant options for high-traffic areas.

Wall finishes

In wet areas, ceramic and porcelain remain the most practical. Elsewhere, paint — plastic or lime-based — wallpaper, timber panelling or natural stone add texture and character.

How to decide

Think about how each room is used, cleaning and upkeep, how it fits the whole and your budget. Seeing and touching samples in the real light of your home helps a great deal.
